Sun Valley man gets a 20- year term for part in dog thefts
Staff Report • June 4, 2010

A Sun Valley man who pleaded guilty earlier this year to three felonies related to helping a friend
invade an elderly couple’s home to steal two pricey English bull dog pups, before accidentally running
over the protective grandmother dog during their getaway was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday.

He will be eligible for parole in 4 years 4 months.

Jonathan Paul Johnson, 24, known as “Lil John, ” was sentenced Washoe District Judge Connie
Steinheimer to three aiding and abetting felonies: home invasion, robbery of the elderly and grand larceny.

“Judge Steinheimer’s sentence should send a strong message to our local criminal element: Don’t mess
with the elderly, and don’t mess with puppies,” Washoe County Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan G
reco said in a statement. “Under Nevada law you are subject to the same penalties as the primary
offender, even if you are only an aider and abettor.”

The 7-week-old male and female puppies that were stolen on Nov. 19, 2008 have never been found.
Their 5-year-old grandmother, Wendy, died after she chased the suspects, and was accidentally run
over during their getaway. Wendy was the beloved pet of Sparks dog breeders Ross and Arlene
Harwood. Wendy’s daughter, Minnie, was mother to the stolen puppies who had been up for sale and
listed in various advertisements.

Johnson’s friend was never been found, authorities have said.

Alleged puppy-theft accomplice held for Washoe trial

By Jaclyn O’Malley

A 22-year-old Army veteran was bound over for trial Wednesday on charges of helping another man invade a Reno home, steal two English bull dog puppies from an elderly couple and kill the family dog and injure the owner with the getaway vehicle.

Jonathan Paul Johnson of Reno was in tears as he was taken from Justice of the Peace Pete Sferraza’s courtroom. He faces three counts of aiding and abetting felonies: home invasion, grand larceny and robbery upon a person older than 60.

Joseph and Arlene Harwood said they have sold such a puppy for $1,650 to $1,950.
Lawyer Jessica Longley said her client was deployed in a war zone while in the Army and has been struggling with substance abuse.

Johnson is accused of supplying his vehicle and acting as lookout at the Harwood home Nov. 19 while another man stole the puppies.

Police said Michael Donica, nicknamed “White Rabbit,” is a person of interest they want to question. Detectives said Donica has fled the state.

He is named in the charges against Johnson as being the man who broke down the Harwoods’ door, stole the puppies, struck Joseph Harwood with the vehicle and ran over Harwoods’ dog, Wendy. The male and female puppies were 7 weeks-old.

The couple said several people had visited their home to view the puppies before the theft. Police said a Secret Witness tip led to Johnson.

Johnson’s live-in girlfriend, Jessica Engelhardt, testified Wednesday that he told her what happened and that Donica wanted Johnson to go with him because he’s a “tough guy” who was in the military. She said Johnson said “how sorry he was,” Engelhardt testified.

Reno police Det. Bob Evans testified Johnson confessed to his involvement and told him Donica asked to borrow his vehicle “go steal some puppies.”
Evans said Johnson and Donica were surprised Harwood was sleeping near the pen and did not think he would follow them outside.

“He said Donica told him this would be an easy job because he knew the puppies would be close to the front door and that the owners were elderly,” Evans said. “(Johnson) thought it was going to be a sneaky burglary they were doing and didn’t realize it wasn’t until (Donica) got out the sledgehammer.”

Joseph Harwood said he heard a “loud, huge crash,” saw a man reaching into the puppy pen and yelled to his wife to call police.
Harwood said he tried to pop the hood on the getaway vehicle to pull wires but was knoced to the ground when the vehicle accelerated. He sasw Wendy in the street.
“She wasn’t moving,” he said. “She was dying.”
